Note: The above mentioned data is only an approximation and the waiting period might differ depending on the variant, powertrain and colour chosen.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno: The highest selling car in the premium hatchback segment has a similar waiting period in nearly all the cities mentioned above - 4 weeks. Or just under a month. For Gurgaon and Faridabad buyers, the waiting is listed as exactly a month and only those in Hyderabad can have it sooner than the rest with a waiting time of 3 weeks.
The Baleno is sold through the Nexa chain of dealerships only and has recently been updated with BS6 petrol engines.
Hyundai Elite i20: It may not be the highest selling in its segment, but the Elite i20 is a staple of Hyundai’s portfolio in India. To get your hands one one now, the longest wait is for those in Mumbai, Thane or Lucknow. For most others, the waiting period is anywhere between 10 to 20 days. Meanwhile, residents of Chandigarh, Ghaziabad, Kolkata, Faridabad, Indore and Noida can pretty much get one on the spot with no waiting period listed.
Honda Jazz: The Japanese option in the premium hatchback list also has the least waiting time overall in the cities mentioned above. Interested buyers can get a new Honda Jazz right off the lot in Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Kolkata, Ghaziabad and Noida. The longest wait is for Bangalore buyers, 20 days, whereas the rest can get one in anywhere between 1 week to 15 days.
Volkswagen Polo: The average waiting time to get a Polo in one of these cities is around 15 days. Buyers in Coimbatore will have to wait for up to 20 days and those in Indore for 1 month. However, the longest wait to get a VW Polo is 45 days for potential buyers in Surat. The lucky cities to get one off the lot are Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
There will be two new entrants to this segment by mid-2019, the Toyota Glanza and the Tata Altroz. While one is a rebadged Maruti, the other is Tata’s first model on their new ALFA platform. The premium hatchback segment shows little signs of slowing down.
