Unlikely to come to India, but may share electric technology with upcoming Volvo EVs
Polestar, Volvo’s performance-cum-electrified car division, has teased its first all-electric vehicle -- Polestar 2. It will be the brand’s second model and will target the same market as the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 will be a four-door fastback with an expected electric range of over 450km.
Polestar has revealed some initial details about the Polestar 2 which mentions the total output to be close to 400PS which is a similar figure offered by the performance version of the Model 3. Another detail discloses that the Polestar 2 will debut the new Google Android HMI for Volvo Group with an in-car version of the Google Assistant. It will borrow some of the electric tech that was seen in the Polestar 1 hybrid sports coupe which had a performance rating of 600PS and 1000Nm.
That top-view of the rear end of the Polestar 2 is the only image available right now but there’s more to come with the full reveal expected in a couple of weeks. The only image of the Polestar 2 suggests that its tail lamps will be connected.
In terms of prices, Polestar is expected to price its first EV around the Tesla Model 3 prices. The Model 3 with eqivalent range retails for close to Rs 30 lakh in the US market. The Polestar 2 will be the first of four EVs expected to launch by 2020 followed by the Polestar 3 which will be a luxury crossover.
The Polestar 2 will launch in 2019 itself and go into production after the Polestar 1 and won’t be sold the traditional way either. Instead it will only be available via Polestar’s subscription service. While Volvo will soon bring electrified products to India, we expect the luxury carmaker to disclose its India-related electric vehicle strategy this week.
