Two-wheeler sales go up in July; Honda, Royal Enfield top gainers

Two-wheeler manufacturers in India have released their sales figures for the month of July.

Two-wheeler manufacturers in India have released their sales figures for the month of July. Compared to the same month last year, most two-wheeler manufacturers have seen a rise in sales. Here's a brief report on the sales numbers released by the motorcycle companies.

Yamaha India

The Japanese bike manufacturer has announced a 12 per cent growth in the Indian domestic market (including Nepal) as compared to last year’s figure. The company sold 65,244 units in July 2016 as opposed to 58,477 units in July 2015. The company credits the positive growth to its expansion strategy in Tier II and Tier III cities.

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India

A few days ago, Honda’s Activa became the largest-selling two-wheeler in the country, surpassing even motorcycles. Honda has also registered a staggering growth in last month’s sale compared to the same period in the year past. The company crossed the monthly sales milestone of 4.5 lakh units last month, which is a huge jump when one considers that it sold 3,89,555 units in July 2015. It has also registered a 33 per cent growth in its exports over last year's figures for the same period.

UM Motorcycles

Though UM Motorcycles is a new entrant in the Indian two-wheeler space, our market has proved to be a key one in expanding the company's reach. UM has reported a global sales growth of 44 per cent compared to last year. The company claims that the introduction of the Renegade series worldwide has particularly helped it register such growth.

UM has also said that it will extend its reach to 35 countries by the fourth quarter of 2016, with the upcoming manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh and Philippines.

Bajaj

Homegrown motorcycle manufacturer, Bajaj has registered a growth of 21 per cent over July 2015’s sales numbers, but also registered a 20 per cent decline in its export numbers for the same period. This has landed Bajaj in a no-profit-no-loss situation in terms of its overall two-wheeler sales.

Royal Enfield

The classic cruiser manufacturer saw a total (domestic + exports) growth of 31 per cent over last year. The domestic sales accounted for 31 per cent growth, while the exports saw a total growth of 40 per cent in July 2016 over July 2015’s figures.

Along with this, Royal Enfield also registered a best-ever first quarter growth with a staggering 42 per cent increase. The company now stands at 566 dealerships across the country and says that it has received a good response for its adventure-tourer, the Himalayan.

Hero Motocorp

India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, registered a growth of 9.13 per cent over the same period last year by retailing 5,32,113 units in July 2016.
