India-spec Jeep Compass Trailhawk revealed

Features cosmetic as well as mechanical updates to aid its off-roading credentials.

Jeep has finally debuted the Compass Trailhawk in India ahead of its official launch by July this year. The Trailhawk is essentially a more off-road focused version of the Compass, which has been on sale in the country since 2017. Although the launch is in July, the SUV will be on display at dealerships starting this month.

The Trailhawk is powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine also seen on the standard SUV, however, here it is offered in a BS6 avatar, producing 170PS of power and 350Nm of peak torque. While the power has gone down by 3PS, torque has remained identical to the BS4 version. The power from this engine is sent to all four wheels of the SUV via a 9-speed automatic gearbox. It is a welcome introduction since so far, the diesel Compass was available with a 6-speed MT gearbox only.

Also new is Jeep’s Active Drive 4x4 system, which offers a low-range gearbox, hill descent control and a new Rock mode for the Selec-Terrain system. Although the standard Compass also gets 4WD with the Selec-Terrain system, it misses out on the above-mentioned features.

Along with the new gearbox and a relatively better 4WD system, the Compass Trailhawk also gets updated front and rear bumpers for better approach and departure angles, increased ground clearance and improved water wading capacity. Jeep has also installed underbody skid plates, all-terrain tyres and all weather floor mats to complement the off-road focused nature of the SUV.

Apart from the mechanical updates, Jeep has also done enough to differentiate the Trailhawk from the standard Compass in terms of looks as well. Up front, it features a matt black decal on the bonnet to avoid reflection, gunmetal finish on the front grille, fog lamp surrounds and the window line, along with an updated bumper (as mentioned above). The side profile features ‘Trail Rated’ badges on the front fenders, blacked out ORVMs and new 17-inch alloys, which are a size smaller than the 18-inch units available on the Compass Limited Plus.

At the back, the Trailhawk features a red tow hook, and a ‘Trailhawk’ badge to set itself apart from the standard Compass. Interestingly, the iconic front red tow hooks, seen on the global-spec model as well as all ‘trail rated’ models, are not present on the India-spec car due to the pedestrian safety norms in the country.

On the inside, while the SUV features red accents all around the cabin, the feature list looks similar to the top-spec Compass Limited Plus. Like the latter, the Compass Trailhawk is equipped with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-pane panoramic sunroof (optional), dual-zone AC, six airbags and a reverse parking camera.

As mentioned above, the Compass Trailhawk will go on sale by July this year. It is expected to be priced upwards of Rs 25 lakh. For reference, the current top-spec Compass, Limited Plus 4X4, is priced at Rs 23.11 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
