Volkswagen India today announced its plans to recall 1.9 lakh cars sold in India from July in order to fix the emission software. Volkswagen says fixing the emission software for all the cars will take 10 months of time. Regarding this recall, Volkswagen admitted that unlike US the recall in India is purely voluntary in nature as it did not face any charges against violating emission norms.
Volkswagen India Head of Marketing, Mr. Kamal Basu reported, "Starting from the second half of 2016, Volkswagen will recall 1.90 lakh cars and continue till ten months. Since recall was done in the US to fix the emission software, the company decided to do also the same in India to keep updated with the changes made outside.”
Basu added, starting from July, communication would be sent to the customers regarding this and also to make them understand that the recall was purely voluntary in nature. He also said when the emission scandal broke out in the US, Volkswagen India saw a drop in sales but now the trend has reversed.
In September 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that many VW cars being sold in America had a "defeat device" - or software - in diesel engines that could detect when they were being tested, changing the performance accordingly to improve results.
