Auto Expo 2016: Nitin Gadkari tells firms to get ready for BS6

Government is firm on introducing BS-VI emission norms by 2020.

New Delhi: Bringing home the message that government is firm on introducing BS-VI emission norms by 2020, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday asked auto makers not to worry about the availability of suitable fuel but focus on developing engines to meet the guidelines.

He pointed out that pollution is a big problem and “green judges are now very active”. “It is the time India take right steps,” he said while inaugurating Auto Expo. He said the government has decided to introduce the BS-VI emission norms from April 1, 2020. “We are going to make these norms mandatory. Don’t bother about the fuel. That will be my responsibility and (I am) following up with the petroleum ministry and at any cost, we will see to that,” said the minister. Last month, the Centre decided to directly implement Bharat Stage (BS) VI by April 2020 and to skip BS V altogether.

Tata Signa will replace old trucks:

Tata Motors on Thursday launched the Signa range of commercial vehicles, which will replace the company’s all conventional range of trucks — both medium and heavy. The new models will cost around two per cent more than the existing ones.

Tata’s product line-up features the new sporty compact sedan, the SUV HEXA, compact SUV - NEXON and the personalised editions of the passenger vehicles.

Ignis, Baleno RS launch in festive season:

Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday unveiled stunning urban blue concept Ignis and concept Baleno RS at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016. Both these vehicles are expected to be launched around the festival season this year to maintain its lead in India’s auto market.

While the Ignis is positioned as a smart urban compact car, the Baleno RS is a sporty version of the company’s premium hatchback Baleno, which will be powered by a one-litre Boosterjet direct injection turbo engine.

“Concept Ignis and concept Baleno RS are our two new offerings for India. These will appeal to the third generation Maruti Suzuki customers. The production models of both models will be launched in the NEXA channel,” said Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India. Maruti also showcased a new generation platform that will be the base for many of the company’s future products.
