India-bound Volkswagen T-Cross: interior teased

As expected, the Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV gets a dashboard similar to the new sixth-gen Polo.

Volkswagen has officially released a couple of design sketches of the T-Cross, giving us a fair idea of what we can expect from its cabin. The T-Cross, which is set to be the smallest SUV from the German carmaker so far, is expected to be revealed in October this year.

Based on the sketches, it’s quite evident that the Volkswagen T-Cross will share a similar dashboard layout as the sixth-gen Polo. This is isn’t surprising considering the Polo’s interior was inspired by the cabin of the 2016 T-Cross Breeze concept. The production-spec version of the SUV will have a driver-centric dashboard with a single panel of glass covering the dual-display setup for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Volkswagen says this setup brings both units along a ‘common visual axis’, we feel will avoid distractions.

The dashboard will feature dual-coloured panels which was first seen on the new Polo. The sketches show an orange-and-black colour theme, which is similar to what is offered in the hatchback. The Euro-spec Polo is offered with as many as eight different colour options for the dashboard panels. So expect VW to offer as many options with the SUV as well.

It will also pack the second generation of Volkswagen’s fully-digital instrument cluster called Active Info Display. It boasts of a screen size of 10.25 inches! As for infotainment, the T-Cross will pack the latest Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB) system with a screen size up to 8-inch (depending on the variant). Overall, the dual-screen setup seems minimalistic thanks to the glass encasing. In case you’re wondering, these features are also available with the new Polo and Virtus sedan (Vento replacement). Apart from this, the T-Cross is expected to borrow the wireless phone charging system too. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has confirmed that the T-Cross will feature BeatsAudio, a premium sound system sourced from Beats by Dr. Dre.

VW has already revealed that the Euro-spec T-Cross will have a flexible boot space thanks to a unique sliding mechanism for the second-row seats. This means the standard 385-litre boot can be expanded to 455 litres with just a simple lever.

Volkswagen T-Cross (Euro-spec)

We expect Volkswagen to introduce the T-Cross in India in the second half of 2020. This should coincide with the launch of Skoda’s made-for-India SUV. However, the India-spec T-Cross is expected to be bigger than the Euro-spec version, which, at 4107mm, is a mere 54mm longer than the sixth-gen Polo. But what makes us think that it will be bigger than the European T-Cross? Find out here: Opinion: India-spec Volkswagen T-Cross Could Be Bigger Than Euro-Spec
