New York Subway Tragedy: Indian-Origin Woman, Friend Killed On Tracks

New York: Two people were killed after a subway train struck them on the tracks at Spring Street station on Sunday. The deceased were identified as 24-year-old Malaika Chitre, a resident of Dayton, New Jersey, and Navam Kaul, a resident of Sayreville, New Jersey. Chitre was of Indian origin, while Kaul was a Nepali-American. Both had studied at Rutgers University.
According to reports, the southbound No. 4 train entered the station when the driver applied the emergency brakes. However, it was too late to prevent the collision, and both victims died at the scene.

Police are investigating the incident from all possible angles, including why the two entered the railway tracks.
According to the New York Daily News, around 100 passengers were evacuated from the train following the incident.
Kaul attended Rutgers Business School from 2020 to 2024 but did not complete his degree. Chitre completed her Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s School of Arts and Sciences in May 2024. She was working as an operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, while Kaul was employed as a data analyst at Bloomberg.
