London: The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) has arrested eight people as part of an investigation into an international network of men accused of drugging and sexually abusing women they knew.

The investigation began after German journalists alerted the NCA in 2025 to an online platform allegedly used to facilitate organised drug-facilitated sexual assaults. The agency said it has identified more than 270 individuals linked to the forum and its offshoots, with members found in dozens of countries across every continent.

According to the NCA, there are currently 14 investigations underway in the UK and overseas. Deputy Director Nigel Leary described the findings as "deeply concerning," saying drug-facilitated sexual assault is becoming increasingly organised through digital platforms and remains significantly under-reported because victims may not remember the abuse after being sedated.

The NCA said the crimes represent an evolving threat rooted in domestic abuse, while officials warned that online communities are enabling offenders to coordinate such offences.

Separately, Europol said investigators from Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States recently met in London to exchange intelligence on similar cases.

Under its Project Medusa operation, Europol said authorities identified 156 victims and perpetrators of drug-facilitated sexual assaults, primarily involving intimate-partner abuse linked to misogynistic online communities. The agency also said four new online communities promoting such offences were uncovered.

The investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of drug-facilitated sexual assault cases across Europe following the conviction of Dominique Pelicot in France, a case that exposed years of abuse involving his former wife, Gisèle Pelicot.
