NDP's Jagmeet Singh Resigns After Losing Seat in Canada Election
NDP leader exits after defeat in Burnaby Central, marking end of a historic tenure
Indo-Canadian politician and leader of Canada's New Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh, announced his decision to resign on a dramatic election night that also saw him lose his own seat from Burnaby Central in British Columbia.
Singh, who made history as the first person of a visible minority to lead a major federal party in Canada, conceded defeat after trailing significantly in his riding, a seat he had successfully defended in previous elections. Facing mounting internal pressure following the NDP’s poor national performance, Singh said he would step down as party leader once a successor is chosen.
“It has been the honour of my life to serve Canadians. Though the results tonight are not what we had hoped for, I remain deeply grateful for the journey,” Singh said in an emotional address to his supporters.
Singh's leadership tenure, which began in 2017, was marked by his efforts to champion progressive causes, advocate for social justice, and support the working class. However, the NDP struggled to expand its national footprint under his leadership.
Political analysts suggest Singh’s exit could trigger a new phase for the NDP, as the party looks to rebuild and redefine its strategy in a shifting Canadian political landscape.
