New York: A 52-year-old man died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday evening, according to police.
The New York Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call around 6.30 pm and found the man with severe burn injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials said the man was holding a Tibetan flag at the time of the incident. His identity has not been disclosed as his family is yet to be informed.
Police said an investigation into the self-immolation is under way and the motive is not yet known.
A United Nations spokesperson said the incident occurred after scheduled meetings had concluded for the day.
China maintains that Tibet has been part of its territory since the mid-13th century and has been under Communist Party administration since 1951. However, sections of Tibetans contend that the region was historically independent and have raised concerns over cultural and resource issues.
China does not recognise the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan government-in-exile, and dialogue with representatives of the Dalai Lama has remained suspended since 2010.
