A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Tibet on Thursday, days after a devastating glacier-related disaster triggered flash floods in parts of Tibet and Nepal.

India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake occurred 128 kilometres northeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand. There was no immediate information on whether the tremor caused casualties or damage to property.

The earthquake comes days after a catastrophic flood disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border that has left a trail of destruction across the Himalayan region. The floods, triggered after a glacier-related collapse on August 26, swept through settlements, roads and infrastructure, leaving thousands of people missing.

Rescue and recovery operations are continuing in the worst-affected areas, with authorities facing difficult terrain, damaged roads and large quantities of mud and debris. Thousands of people have also been displaced, while families continue to search for relatives who remain missing.

The disaster has also severely affected hydropower projects and other critical infrastructure along the affected river systems. Rescue teams are searching areas where workers are feared trapped in tunnels and power facilities.

The latest earthquake highlights the continuing seismic and geological risks in the Himalayan region, which is prone to earthquakes, landslides, glacier-related events and other natural hazards.
