An 18-year-old Indian tourist was killed after a horse-drawn carriage overturned in Central Park on Wednesday, turning a family vacation into a tragedy.

The victim, identified by police as Romanch Mahajan, was visiting the United States with his parents and younger brother. Authorities said the incident occurred at around 2:47 pm near Cherry Hill and Bethesda Fountain, one of the park’s busiest tourist areas.

According to preliminary findings, the family had paused during their carriage ride to take photographs when the horse suddenly bolted. The carriage sped uncontrollably along the roadway before overturning, fatally injuring the teenager.



Driver Left Carriage Unattended

Investigators said the carriage driver had stepped away from the vehicle to take a photograph of the family. Officials and labour representatives noted that leaving the carriage unattended is a violation of established safety regulations.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.
