Hollywood Awards Season Schedule Adjustments Amid Wildfires

Hollywood’s awards season has all but come to a rare halt as the wildfires continue to disrupt life and work in the Los Angeles area. There are near daily updates from the Hollywood guilds and organizations that put on awards shows as the industry navigates the ongoing crisis.

Here’s an overview of the major upcoming awards shows, from the Oscars to the Grammys, including updated dates for nominations. 

Academy Award Nominations

Jan. 23
The Oscar nominations have been twice-delayed (initially slated for Jan. 17, then Jan. 19) due to the wildfires. The announcement accommodates an extended voting deadline and will be made via a virtual presentation.

Grammy Awards
Feb. 2
The Grammys’ schedule remains largely unaffected despite some auxiliary events being canceled. Universal Music Group redirected resources to wildfire recovery aid.
Broadcast live on CBS (host TBA).

Critics Choice Awards
Feb. 7
Originally scheduled for Jan. 12, the Critics Choice Awards have been delayed twice.
Location: Barker Hangar, Santa Monica
Broadcast live on E!, hosted by Chelsea Handler.

Producers and Directors Guild Awards
Feb. 8
Two separate, untelevised events held in Los Angeles.

  • Producers Guild: The Darryl F. Zanuck Award winner frequently aligns with the Oscar Best Picture.
  • Directors Guild: Often predicts the Oscar-winning director.

Writers Guild Awards
Feb. 15
Recognizes adapted and original screenplays, documentaries, and television work.
This is an untelevised event.

BAFTAs
Feb. 16
The EE BAFTA Film Awards are the British equivalent of the Oscars. Despite the fires, nominations were unaffected.
Broadcast: BBC in the U.K., BritBox in North America
Host: David Tennant.

Spirit Awards
Feb. 22
Focuses on films with budgets of $30 million or less. It sometimes aligns with Oscar frontrunners (e.g., Everything Everywhere All at Once) but not always (Oppenheimer).

SAG Awards
Feb. 23
The Screen Actors Guild Awards are a strong Oscar predictor, often mirroring Best Picture winners. The last three ensemble winners (Oppenheimer, Everything Everywhere All at Once, CODA) also won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Academy Awards
March 2
The Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The Scientific and Technical Awards (originally Feb. 18) have been delayed, and the annual nominees' luncheon has been canceled.
