Ankara: Turkey's state-run news agency says US-led coalition air strikes and Turkish artillery fire against Islamic State group targets in Syria have killed 18 militants.

Anadolu Agency, quoting unnamed security officials, said Thursday that the IS targets were attacked after Turkish authorities on Wednesday determined that the extremist group was preparing to strike Turkey from northern Syria.

It said Turkish and coalition strikes also destroyed two gun-mounted vehicles, various mortar and artillery positions as well as a building used as a defence shelter. The report could not be independently verified.

Turkish artillery regularly strike at IS targets in Syria in response to rocket fire that have hit the border town of Kilis. The cross-border fire from Syria has claimed 21 lives and wounded dozens in Kilis this year.
