Canberra: A Muslim leader from Australia has expressed his wish to permitted a second wife under the Sharia, even as his current spouse said that she does not mind if her husband brings home a second wife.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Keysar Trad, the president of Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said that it was natural for men to have two or more wives. He also added that it was better to have a second wife rather than divorcing the first one.

Trad said that Islamic law allows polygamy and that it should be made legal in Australia.

Expressing his wish to have a second wife, Trad said that his current spouse, Hanifeh, would not mind if he married another woman and brought her home.

He also said that the country's legal system needs to understand that Allah hates divorce, which is why the men marry more than one woman, rather than breaking up with her.

"I know that Australian society has problems with this but I would like Australian society to realise that Islam put a limit on plural relationships," said Trad.

“Islam did not introduce plural relationships. Humanity had practiced a variety of plural relationships,” he added.

"I don't think he is looking for another partner, but if another partner comes in the way, who am I to be in the way," said Trad's wife.

However, under the Sharia, women are not allowed to have more than one husband.
