Washington: The United States began celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of its Independence on Saturday amid a heatwave across several states and a backdrop of political polarisation.

Commemorations of the signing of the Declaration of Independence are being held across the country, with events ranging from official ceremonies to public festivities.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to address celebrations at the National Mall in Washington ahead of a large-scale fireworks display. He had earlier spoken at Mount Rushmore, where he warned of threats to American liberty.
Fireworks displays and public events are planned in cities including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. In New York, celebrations began with a midnight ball drop, while Bristol in Rhode Island, known for hosting one of the country’s oldest Independence Day events, is also marking the occasion.
In Los Angeles, a concert hosted by Queen Latifah is set to feature performances by The Smashing Pumpkins and Chris Stapleton, with Chaka Khan as a special guest.
However, extreme heat has disrupted some events, particularly along the East Coast. In Washington, parts of the Great American State Fair were temporarily closed, and the city’s Independence Day parade was cancelled due to high temperatures.
Weather conditions varied across the country, with cooler temperatures reported in the Pacific Northwest.
The anniversary is also coinciding with other events, including Major League Baseball games and international sporting fixtures being held in the United States.
The celebrations are taking place amid continuing political divisions. Trump described communism as a major threat to the country, while leaders from the Democratic Party highlighted concerns over democratic institutions and the nation’s future.
Public responses reflected a mix of celebration and concern, with some emphasising unity and resilience as the country marks the milestone.
