Donald Trump claimed that modern governments should study the actions of US general John Pershing when fighting Islamic extremism and referred to debunked claims about Pershing’s tactics.

Mr Trump, responding to the Spain attack, tweeted people should “study what General Pershing” did to “terrorists when caught”.

In February 2016, Mr Trump had told Washington Post, Pershing killed terrorists with bullets “dipped in pigs’ blood”. Historians have debunked the story as a “fabrication”.
