Washington: US President Donald Trump's team has accused an "unelected bureaucracy" of sabotaging his presidency after reports emerged that he asked the sacked FBI Director to end the agency's investigation into ties between his former national security adviser and Russia.

The Trump Make America Great Again Committee sent out an email to supporters with the subject line "Sabotage" and asked for donations of as small as USD 1 to help Trump "drain the swamp" in Washington.

The fundraising pitch came less than an hour after The New York Times published a report that Trump asked ousted FBI Director James Comey to quash the investigation against his former NSA James Flynn.

"You already knew the media was out to get us. But sadly it's not just the fake news. There are people within our own unelected bureaucracy that want to sabotage President Trump and our entire America First movement," the email reads.

"They don't want it to be America First. They want it to be Special Interests first to enrich themselves all while the citizens of our country remain an afterthought."

"We have no choice but to completely DRAIN THE SWAMP," it reads.
