New York: Even as the coronavirus cases continues to spiral across the US, a top health official has warned that the overall situation in the US due to the outbreak will get worse in the coming days.
“I can say we will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now,” Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the US House Oversight and Reform Committee in Washington DC on Wednesday.
According to Dr Fauci, how much it gets worse would depend on two things: The ability of the authorities to restrict infected travellers from entering the country, and the ability of the federal government and the states to mitigate the local outbreaks across the country. Asked by a member house committee whether the worst is yet to come, Dr Fauci said: “Yes, it is.”
Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases has shot up to 1050 including 29 deaths by Wednesday noon. Of the deaths, Washington state accounted for 19, followed by California and Florida 2 each, and New Jersey and South Dakota reporting one death each. CNN, however, said 31 deaths have taken place in the US due to the coronavirus till date.
