Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced parental controls for teenagers at a time when companies are under pressure to introduce online safety measures for children.
WhatsApp said parents will be able to decide who can contact their child’s account, which groups they can join, and review message requests from unknown contacts.
Additionally, parents will be able to access and change the privacy settings of their child’s WhatsApp account. Parents can set privacy settings, such as who can view their child’s profile picture and who can add their child to group chats. All the settings are “gated” by a PIN, WhatsApp said.
Parents will also receive notifications when their child joins or exits groups.
They can also choose the settings for Meta AI — between the 13+ setting, where teens will see conversations with Meta AI that are similar to what they would see in content rated for ages 13+, and the most restrictive “Limited content” option, where they will see more limited content in conversations with Meta AI.
The messaging app said parents will not be able to see the messages their child is sending or receiving, as they will remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption, along with calls.
