OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT users will be able to lock chats, allowing them to keep private or sensitive conversations hidden from the regular chat history, pinned chats, and standard conversation search.
Users can secure their locked chats with a four-digit account PIN or use Face ID, Touch ID, or their device’s unlock method.
“This can help keep sensitive conversations out of view when you share your screen or use a shared device,” OpenAI said.
Users can access their locked chats again when needed. Locked chats are not similar to ChatGPT’s Temporary Chats which does not appear in chat history.
OpenAI noted that locking a chat does not enable end-to-end encryption or create a separate encrypted vault. It also does not change how long OpenAI retains the chat, alter the Improve the model for everyone setting, remove information ChatGPT remembered before the chat was locked, or override applicable workspace policies, safety requirements, or legal and compliance obligations.
OpenAI also warned that resetting an account PIN permanently deletes all locked chats, files, and other content protected by the previous PIN.
Locked chats are available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.
