iOS 11.4 to bring USB Restricted Mode for iPhones, iPads

In a recent discovery by ElcomSoft blog, a new security feature has been uncovered to be present in the next iteration of iOS. The USB Restricted Mode has been found to be present in iOS 11.4 Beta and is most likely to make it to the stable version of iOS 11.4, which is slated to release pretty soon.

The USB Restricted Mode was first spotted on the Beta version of iOS 11.3. The feature was said to provide additional security to iPhones and iPads, especially from several law enforcement agencies trying hack into iOS devices of criminals. Basically, the feature disables any sort of data transmission from the iPhone’s or iPad’s Lightning port if the device hasn’t been unlocked using a Passcode or TouchID in the last seven days. The Lightning port will only allow charging the device over the port. To allow the iOS device to communicate with any other device or USB accessory, one must unlock the device to allow data transmission.

As of now, the feature is only limited to the beta version of iOS 11.4. It still remains to be seen whether Apple will roll out the feature in the stable build of iOS 11.4. The feature was last seen on the beta build of iOS 11.3 but was omitted from the final release of iOS 11.3.
