Microsoft Launches AI-Powered Copilot Mode In Edge Browser

The Copilot Mode can perform tasks such as booking a restaurant by searching across all open tabs

Copilot Mode can help carry out tasks, organize browsing into topic-based queries and compare results across all open tabs without requiring users to switch between them.
Microsoft has launched a new “Copilot Mode” in its Edge browser, designed to enhance the browsing experience using artificial intelligence (AI).
“Copilot will soon be able to guide you in your tasks and organize your browsing – past and present – into helpful, topic-based journeys,” said Sean Lyndersay, Vice President, Product, Microsoft Edge.
Copilot Mode brings the Copilot chatbot experience directly to the Edge browser’s tab page. The Copilot Mode can perform tasks such as booking a restaurant by searching across all open tabs. Users can also ask Copilot to compare hotels and assist with purchases using information from their active tabs.
Microsoft plans to allow Copilot access to users’ Edge browser credentials and history — with their permission — enabling it to make bookings on their behalf.
Lyndersay emphasized that using Copilot Mode is optional. “With Copilot Mode, you can also choose to turn the experience on and off as you wish through your Edge settings. If you choose not to turn on Copilot Mode, you can continue to browse on Edge as usual,” he said.
Microsoft announced that Copilot Mode is available for free on Edge for Windows and Mac for a limited time.
The launch comes amid a wave of AI-powered browser developments. In July, Perplexity AI introduced its Comet browser, while OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its own AI browser soon.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s rival Google has launched “AI Mode,” which provides comprehensive, conversational responses to user queries using web-sourced information. Last week, Google revealed that AI Mode has surpassed 100 million monthly active users.
