Elon Musk.
Billionaire Elon Musk has sparked controversy after saying that the social media platform Instagram is “for girls.”
While replying to a thread discussing social media habits, the SpaceX CEO wrote on X, “Instagram is for girls.” The post referred to trends such as “thirst traps,” posting pictures of home-cooked meals, and constantly uploading stories.
The remark immediately triggered widespread reactions online. The controversy intensified when Musk followed up with another comment, saying: “Obviously. Sometimes grown men send me their Instagram profiles and I’m like are you transitioning or what?”
The post quickly went viral, with several users reacting to it. "Men should have a separate app called BROSTAGRAM because it explains the pout, the soft lighting, and the 47 mirror selfies," one user wrote.
Another user commented, “Yeah, unless of course you owned it, then it would be for ‘super duper alpha manly men’… right Elon?”
“And yet from Instagram and its massive user base, they basically made an entire Twitter alternative with the flip of a button,” a third user wrote.
Musk has frequently criticised platforms owned by Meta Platforms while describing X as more open. In January 2026, Musk said, “WhatsApp is not secure. Even Signal is questionable. Use X Chat.”
