Google is considering buying HTC’s smartphone business, claims a Chinese news publication Commercial Times.

According to the report, the search engine giant is considering two separate options to close the deal that is either to become a strategic partner or outright buy the entire smartphone unit.

The two firms are reportedly in the ‘final stage of negotiation’.

At present, HTC manufactures Pixel smartphone for Google, and is also known to build the standard version of the second-generation Pixel smartphone slated to be launched this October.

Bad financial health of HTC has been cited as the main reason behind the on progress discussion. The report claims that Google is looking at the HTC acquisition as a “strategic investment”.

An official confirmation from the two is awaited, but it is expected to be finalised by the end of this year.
