Facebook adds E2E encryption to Messenger app
The update is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Facebook has rolled out end-to-end encryption for all its 900 million Facebook Messenger users. The social media giant introduced E2E encryption on its messaging app service via a “Secret Conversation” option available inside the app.
Users can find the “Secret Conversation” feature by tapping on “Me” option available within the app.
“Your messages are already secure, but secret conversations are encrypted from one device to another,” reads a description in the app.
Earlier this year, Facebook-owned WhatsApp pushed E2E encryption. WhatsApp never provided its users an option to chose their messages to be E2E encrypted or not, but its parent company—Facebook is giving that option to its users to either opt-in or out of the encryption.
The idea in the end-to-end encryption is when you send a message only intended person can see and read your message.
However, the feature will not offer encryption in group conversation. “Only one device at a time will be able to send and receive secret messages. All secret conversations on other devices will be closed,” says Facebook, once user switch on the encryption mode.
Apart from this, Facebook is also providing a “Delete secret conversation” option, which will let users to permanently delete the conversation history from their device.
