Qualcomm aims to bring VR to smartphones with new Snapdragon 835 SoC

The Snapdragon 835 is equipped with Quick Charge 4.0 technology for up to 20 per cent faster charging

Samsung will use use the processors in half of its next update of the Galaxy S smartphone that will launch in 2017.

Qualcomm on January 3 unveiled its latest chip Snapdragon 835 at the consumer-electronics show CES 2017 in Las Vegas, aiming to bring both virtual and augmented reality experience to the coming smartphones.

“Our new flagship Snapdragon processor is designed to meet the demanding requirements of mobile virtual reality and ubiquitous connectivity while supporting a variety of thin and light mobile designs,” said Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, and president, QCT.

“The Snapdragon 835 has an unprecedented level of technology integration that supports superior battery life, improved multimedia, and exceptional photography with gigabit class speeds for fast, immersive experiences,” Amon added.

The chip is based on a Samsung built 10nm FinFET process. As a result, it is 35 per cent smaller in package size. The chip is claimed to consume 25 per cent less power compared to the previous flagship processor.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 835 is equipped with Quick Charge 4.0 technology for up to 20 per cent faster charging and up to 30 per cent higher efficiency than Quick Charge 3.0.

Snapdragon 835 also supports 4K Ultra HD premium (HDR10) video, wide colour gamut 10-bit displays, object and scene-based 3D audio, and VR/AR motion tracking.
