Recently, the Apple Watch saved a young girl’s life after she crashed her car. Now, the Apple Watch has played saviour again by helping an 87-year old woman who met in a car accident. Introduced with the Apple Watch Series 4, the fall-detection feature may not seem as glamorous as say for example an ECG on your wrist; however, this silent feature, that kicks in only when you actually fall alerts emergency services to save you when you may not be able to save yourself. The woman, Dotty White is crediting this very feature for coming to her rescue.

Dotty White met with an accident in Maine when she was on her way home from grocery shopping. As told to News Center Maine, “Apparently a woman came out of a road here and ran straight into me.”

Immediately after the accident happened, White was unable to reach her mobile to contact emergency services but little did she know that her Apple Watch was already doing it for her. The Apple Watch registered her accident as a hard fall which prompted it to activate the device’s fall detection feature.  This not just alerted emergency services but her family members as well.

White states, “The watch dialled my son in Florida, it dialled my daughter in Massachusetts and my daughter in Maine. So they knew something had happened and they knew where it happened.”

The report went on to add, “Her son, James White, says he was notified instantly through a text message. He immediately called his sister, who — after receiving the message herself — rushed to her mother’s side. “It was really helpful to get that message,” James White said. “I knew mom was all set at that point.”

After the accident, White suffered a few broken bones; however, she is thankful for the help the Apple Watch provided. White added, “It’s pretty nice to just have it on your wrist. You have the time, the weather and help.”

Fall detection was introduced last year alongside with watchOS 5 and for user’s below the age of 65, it is disabled by default; but can be enabled manually.
