Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has open-sourced its Grok 2.5 model and plans to do the same for its Grok 3 model in about six months, the billionaire announced on his social media platform X. The model is now available on open source platform Hugging Face.
“The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source. Grok 3 will be made open source in about 6 months,” he wrote on X.
AI engineer Tim Kellog noted that Grok’s license is “custom with some anti-competitive terms.”
Earlier this month, Musk said that xAI would open source its chatbot Grok 2. This move was followed by OpenAI’s launch of two new open-weight AI reasoning models — gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b — trained on a text-only dataset with a focus on science, math, and coding knowledge.
It’s worth noting that open-weight language models differ from true open-source models. Open weights provide access to trained model parameters, while full open-source releases include the source code, training data, and methodologies.
