OpenAI has announced that its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is on track to reach 700 million weekly active users this week.
Nick Turley, Vice President at OpenAI and head of the ChatGPT app, in a post on X, said that ChatGPT had already reached 500 million weekly active users by the end of March and has grown 4x over the past year.
“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI,” Turley wrote.
Since the rollout of its upgraded image-generation capabilities powered by GPT-4, ChatGPT has seen a surge in user engagement. In April, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap revealed that over 130 million users generated more than 700 million images within the first week of the launch.
According to a report by Sensor Tower, ChatGPT users are now engaging with the app for more than 12 days a month on average — placing it just behind Google and Elon Musk’s X. The report also noted that users are spending an average of 16 minutes per day on the app.
