ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly developing a new AI-powered smart speaker without a display that will feature a distinctive design, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The report said the device will have a doughnut-shaped design and will be compact enough to be carried around the house with one hand. The unique form factor is intended to help it stand out in the smart speaker market, which is currently dominated by Amazon and Google.
According to the report, the smart speaker is expected to launch in 2027 and could be priced at more than $300.
OpenAI has reportedly positioned the device as an “AI-first computer that can help users get things done.”
Beyond the smart speaker, the company is also said to be working on several AI-powered consumer devices, including smart glasses. The speaker is reportedly being viewed as OpenAI's entry point into the consumer hardware market.
The AI smart speaker is expected to function similarly to ChatGPT's Voice Mode but with more advanced AI models to deliver more natural, human-like conversations. The device is also said to learn from users over time, allowing it to personalise interactions and respond more like a human.
The report further claimed that the speaker will include moving components to make it appear more lifelike than conventional stationary smart speakers. It is expected to feature speaker grilles, microphones and a built-in battery, allowing it to be used in different locations around the home.
According to Bloomberg, the device will have a premium design with a high-quality metal finish and is expected to include lights, a camera system and other sensors.
