Twinkle Khanna’s Mughal Analogy Gets Trolled
Author’s satirical take on koftas, paneer & kebabs draws mixed reactions online
Twinkle Khanna has triggered an online debate after her latest Mrs Funnybones column drew a satirical link between Mughal history and Indian cuisine.
In her signature humorous style, Khanna wrote about finding a packet of Shahi Masala in her kitchen that had “expired around the same time as the Mughal Empire.” She quipped, “Those who want to erase the Mughals from our history books should first start with lunch... You can’t have your Mughlai paneer, real or analogue and eat it too.”
She suggested that those calling for Mughal history to be removed from textbooks should also give up culinary staples like koftas, kormas, kebabs and Mughlai paneer.
The column drew heavy trolling on social media. Many critics pointed out that dishes have ancient roots tracing back to even India.
Commenters argued that acknowledging a period’s culinary influence does not mean history textbooks should romanticise violence! Several users mocked her logic, noting that Indians enjoy Italian pizza without needing to study those nations’ rulers in textbooks.
