The teaser of cinematographer-turned-actor Natty Natraj's political satire TN 2026 has stirred up a storm by taking a dig at several real-life incidents from Tamil Nadu politics, including some linked to the upcoming elections.
Within hours of its release, the teaser became a trending topic, with social media posts dissecting the storyline and its satirical take on contemporary politics. Most viewers felt the teaser mocks actor Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Netizens pointed out that Natty’s costume, hairstyle, and overall look in the film closely resemble Vijay’s. References to fan culture and specific political figures add to the picture.
The teaser introduces Natty as a popular Tamil film actor called ‘Golden Star’ who decides to enter politics by leveraging his fame. Many characters in the story oppose the move, and rival political leaders question the actor’s capacity to lead the state. There are also references to how ‘Golden Star’ converted his fan clubs into a Makkal Mandram.
TVK supporters pushed back. @LegenD_AK_tweet warned that if the film targets Vijay, “the Tamil people will boycott every actor in it, and their cinema careers will end.”
TN 2026, which was reportedly given a U/A Certificate, will hit theatres on April 10, ahead of the State Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.
NATTY CLARIFIES
Speaking exclusively to Deccan Chronicle, Natty says, “Don’t judge a book by its cover. There is no particular reference to any political personality. The content does not hurt any politician. Having worked as a cameraman for Vijay Sir’s films, he is a close friend of mine. If he watches the teaser, he will not be annoyed. He will only be curious about the film. It is close to reality, but is based on 50 years of Tamil Nadu politics.”
