In Telugu cinema, a superstar’s tweet or pre-release appearance can generate more buzz than a trailer. From Jr NTR and Mahesh Babu to Prabhas and Vijay Deverakonda, stars are lending their clout to other films, amplifying publicity and drawing audiences to theatres. But when a film fails to meet expectations, can the hype become a liability?

THE ENDORSEMENT EFFECT

Presented by S S Rajamouli, Don’t Trouble The Trouble drew attention with Jr NTR’s pre-release appearance and Mahesh Babu’s public endorsement. Fahadh Faasil’s performance won praise, but the film’s storytelling divided viewers. Romanchakam, presented by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, also received promotional support from Prabhas and Vijay Deverakonda. Despite the star backing, the film failed at the box-office.

PROMISE–PRODUCT GAP

“A poor man’s money is at stake,” he adds, stressing the responsibility that comes with celebrity influence. “Making some noise for a film is understandable, but stars have to be careful about how strongly they endorse a project. When a star speaks highly of a film, audiences naturally expect something special. If the film doesn’t meet those expectations, the disappointment can be greater.”

For smaller films, a superstar’s endorsement can provide valuable publicity, putting them before audiences they might otherwise struggle to reach. But visibility does not guarantee box-office success. Content, release timing, competition and word of mouth remain decisive.

FRIENDSHIP OR PUBLICITY?

Are stars backing films for their content, friendship or industry solidarity? The motives can blur, leaving audiences questioning the praise. “Stars don’t have to stay away from promoting other films. But they should be selective about what they endorse,” the producer says. “Even one tweet can create considerable hype. If a film falls short, the endorsement’s credibility may suffer.” Yet star backing guarantees neither quality nor success.

FINAL WORD

Trailers, reviews and word of mouth now rival celebrity endorsements. Stars can spark interest and sell tickets, but only the film can sustain it. In Telugu cinema, star power may sell the promise; the film must deliver.
