The Family Hogs It All
No matter how much Bollywood talks about being an ecosystem that gives everyone a chance, when it comes down to brass tacks, the industry still prefers to keep things within the family
Last week’s big historical release Raja Shivaji was not only directed by Ritesh Deshmukh, he and his wife Genelia headlined it, and their two sons Riaan and Rahyl had roles in the film. This week’s rom-com Dadi Ki Shaadi will see three generation of the Kapoor family — Neetu Singh, her daughter Riddhima and Neetu’s granddaughter Samaira — acting together.
The much-hyped Dhurandhar had director Aditya Dhar’s brother Lokesh as co-producer; his brother-in-law Ojas Gautam, created the trailer; and his wife Yami Gautam had a cameo role.
Yes, many of the kith and kin of established personalities in the industry who manage to find openings in films are talented in their own right, and deserve their chances. But how many of them would have got those chances, had it not been for their showbiz connections?
