When the supplies of a leading ‘Zero Calorie’ drink hit a snag in some parts of the country recently, many consumers reacted like loyalists being separated from their loved ones. Instagram was filled with posts lamenting empty shelves and memes about how the ‘0-Cal drink drought’ has interrupted people's daily functioning. Growing nutritional awareness is fuelling the demand for zero-calorie drinks as consumers turn away from sugary beverages.

No Sugar Please!

Kamya Ravi, a fizz enthusiast, says, “I do make myself believe that I’m not messing with my diet when I have a diet drink.” The current generation is becoming increasingly health-conscious and aware of the health risks associated with consuming sugary drinks. They are leaning towards zero or low-calorie drinks. They are a silent and guilt-free alternative to sugary refreshers and sodas. These drinks have become the new norm of everyday indulgence.

Rohan Sehgal, creator of The Sugar Spike Show, says, “We are all, in some way, addicted to sugar, and these sugar-free drinks allow us to satisfy that craving without the calories.”

Craving Reconciliation

Once a niche offering for diabetic and fitness enthusiasts, these ‘Zero Calorie’ beverages have now become a mainstream choice among many youngsters. Aparna Rathore, a nutrition and lifestyle creator, says, “People have finally started flipping the bottle and reading the label. That's the real shift. Brands noticed this change too, and ‘no sugar’ has gone mainstream rather than remaining a niche category”.

By offering a fizzy treat with no calorie baggage, these beverages appeal to modern consumers who want to prioritise fitness without compromising on taste. As the demand continues to grow, more and more brands across categories are racing to expand their zero-sugar drinks. The beverage industry is undergoing a major change. Today, supermarket shelves are flooded with zero-calorie sparkling water, kombucha, diet soft drinks and other low-sugar alternatives.

Market Rewiring

The rise of sugar-free drinks has come to embody contemporary consumption patterns. The health halo effect has rewired how people see and experience products. Sehgal says, “People are far more conscious of their health. Calorie-free drinks look like an easier habit to change to stay healthy.”

Reflecting on her own community, Rathore says that rising concerns about diabetes and greater nutrition awareness have forced brands to reformulate their products to meet consumer preferences.

(Un)sweetened Notes

Many beverage companies are focusing on fruit juices, zero-calorie sparkling waters and no-sugar nutritional drinks. Some have faced flak for using artificial flavours and non-nutritive sweeteners. Ingredients such as aspartame, stevia, and acesulfame-K are commonly used to substitute sugar and lower the calorie count. Although these sweeteners are approved by food safety regulators, their long-term effects are debatable. Aparna feels that having one zero-calorie drink occasionally is fine, but not daily. “The risk comes primarily from the acid, not the sugar. So zero calories doesn’t mean zero consequences. Instead, get most of your sweetness from whole fruits whenever possible,” she says.

The Sweet Spot

Earlier, wellness and indulgence were positioned as opposing choices. However, with the changing times, people today can expect both at once. For a generation that wants taste with a trade-off, zero-calorie beverages have become the ultimate bubbly with ‘zero’ regrets!
