Singer Shilpa Rao.

Singer Shilpa Rao’s performance at the Bollywood Music Project in Mumbai on October 24 ended abruptly when her microphone and audio were switched off midway through her set. The festival was reportedly running 45 minutes behind schedule, with organisers facing a 10 pm curfew. Rao had performed for barely 15–18 minutes of her scheduled 30-minute slot and had already faced microphone glitches.

When she tried to thank the audience, she was reportedly cut off as the Kutle Khan Project took over. The incident sparked outrage online, with fans accusing organisers of disrespecting the National Award-winning singer. The hashtag #JusticeForShilpaRao gained traction, while some attendees alleged that other male performers had been given more time.

AICWA condemns mistreatment

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) condemned the incident and pledged support through legal avenues. In a statement on X, it called Rao’s treatment humiliating and said such behaviour towards an artist would not be tolerated.

Organisers apologise

The festival issued an apology, citing delays caused by extended performances and strict venue curfew regulations. It said the circumstances forced Rao’s set to end prematurely and expressed regret that her performance could not be presented in full.

Kutle Khan’s manager disputes claims

Kutle Khan’s manager, Sharad Sharma, rejected what he called a “fake narrative”. He claimed Rao had completed her set and left before returning to address the audience, adding that Khan paused his own performance to let her speak. Sharma described the online account as misleading and said his team also had reason to be upset.

The singer later addressed the incident in a social media post. Taking to Instagram, Shilpa shared a note expressing her disappointment over how the evening unfolded. “Mumbai, a little piece of my heart broke tonight. It hurts deeply to have something so beautiful taken away from us like this. But even when the music stopped, you did not. The way you kept calling my name, the love in your voices. I could feel it all. Our story tonight was left unfinished. I promise, I will come back. I love you, Mumbai. Forever and ever,” she added.
