Sanjay Gupta, the acclaimed Indian filmmaker known for his slick, stylised crime thrillers and action dramas, passed away at the age of 57 on October 30. He tragically died following a fatal fall at his residence in Mumbai, which resulted in a severe head injury. The unexpected news sent shockwaves through the Hindi film industry, with many colleagues and friends mourning the loss of a passionate storyteller who significantly reshaped modern commercial action cinema.

Sanjay Gupta made a unique mark in Bollywood with his distinct visual grammar, often characterised by desaturated colour grading, dramatic lighting, fast-paced editing and hyper-masculine “swagger”. Heavily inspired by international action cinema and Hollywood noir, he was often considered a pioneer in introducing high-production, Hollywood-style heist and gangster aesthetics to mainstream Hindi audiences.

Gupta made his directorial debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he developed a strong professional and personal bond with actor Sanjay Dutt, who headlined many of his biggest projects. He also founded his own production house, White Feather Films, in 2001.

Some of his most memorable works as a director, producer or screenwriter include: Kaante (2002), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Kaabil (2017), Jazbaa (2015), Mumbai Saga (2021) and Visfot (2024).

Sanjay vows to bring ‘Kaante 2’ to life

Sanjay Dutt has paid an emotional tribute to filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, remembering their years of friendship and vowing to fulfil his wish of making Kaante 2. Sharing a picture with Gupta on Instagram, Dutt expressed disbelief over his friend’s demise, recalling their conversations and cherished memories. Calling him his brother, the actor said he would miss him deeply and that life would never be the same without him.

Revealing that they had recently discussed Kaante 2, Dutt promised to make the sequel a reality in Gupta’s memory, pledging to do everything possible to fulfil his friend’s dream.
