Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Is My Most Honest Work
As the evergreen romance turns 27, Karan Johar says he’s also thinking of continuing the story with SRK
The romance between Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul and Kajol’s Simran in Karan Johar’s first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, won a devoted fan following when it was released on October 16th, 1998. Now, 27 years later, the fascination persists, and for the die-hard fans, there’s great news — the film is to be released with added sequences and production upgrades.
Says Karan Johar, “I am delighted to know that people are still interested in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was my first film. The first film is like the first love. One never forgets it. For me Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was special also because it revived my father’s banner. His last production, Muqaddar Ka Faisla, had wiped him out. I took over when my father’s films were failing. To see him heartbroken was not easy. But Kuch Kuch Hota Hai put the smile back on his face. As a son, that was my proudest moment.”
(Not many know that Kara’s mother Hiroo Johar made a cameo appearance in his directorial debut.)
Says Karan, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is my most honest work, because I was absolutely fearless when I made it. After that I was just trying to hold on to the position I had created.”
And there’s more good news for fans of Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai — the filmmaker is considering revisiting the movie. “I am as curious as you are about what Rahul, Simran, and Rahul’s daughter Anjali are up to,” said Karan. Noting that it had been 16 years since he and Shah Rukh worked together, Karan said “I immensely desire to work with him again. We created a very high bar when we did our last film — My Name Is Khan — together. I never found a story thereafter that could justify his presence, his mega-stardom. A script should deserve Shah Rukh Khan,” he said, adding, “I am toying with the idea of revisiting Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Shah Rukh.”
