Kamal Calls for Cost Cuts in Film Industry
The actor-filmmaker said cinema economics must not be corrected at the expense of workers, technicians and daily wage earners
Veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has issued a strongly worded statement addressing the mounting financial pressures facing the Indian film industry amid global economic uncertainties and rising production expenses.
In his detailed note, Kamal pointed out that increasing fuel, logistics, and energy costs are placing additional strain on cinema at a time when the industry is still witnessing an uneven recovery. He warned that inflationary pressures could also influence consumer spending patterns and impact theatrical business in the coming months.
Kamal stressed that any efforts to correct cinema economics should not come at the expense of workers, technicians, and daily wage earners. Instead, he advocated reducing avoidable expenditures, inflated entourage culture, unnecessary foreign shoots, and poor production planning.
One of the most discussed observations from his statement was his remark questioning why “every love story needs Paris and every honeymoon sequence must end in Switzerland,” urging filmmakers to place greater confidence in India’s own locations and resources. The actor also called for broader industry discussions involving producers, actors, exhibitors, OTT platforms, and unions to collectively address the challenges facing the sector.
