How I Keep Myself Fit! ‘Move With Purpose’

Forget the latest fitness craze — the key to lifelong health is finding movement you enjoy enough to sustain. Dr Gopichand Mannam, cardiothoracic surgeon, shares the same advice he gives his patients, rooted in decades of medical experience

For renowned heart surgeon Dr Gopichand Mannam, exercise is not just a daily habit — it’s a pact I’ve made with myself, my health, and the life I want to live, says the MD of Star Hospitals Group. In over three decades of medical practice, he has seen how regular physical activity can transform lives, working as one of the most potent medicines for both body and mind. And like any effective treatment plan, it yields the best results when it’s intentional, structured, and tailored to the individual.

The first step

Find the routine that works for you, he says. “Not the latest Instagram trend, not your friend’s intense bootcamp — your routine. One that suits your body type, health condition, interests, and lifestyle. It could be a brisk morning walk, cycling along quiet streets, swimming laps, lifting weights, or a calming yoga flow,” says Dr Mannam.

The golden rule: Choose something you enjoy enough to sustain for years.

Set clear, realistic goals

These could be as simple as walking 30 minutes a day, climbing stairs without breathlessness, or maintaining a healthy weight. “Goals give structure to your workouts, turning them from a vague intention into a purposeful mission. Without them, it’s too easy to skip “just this once” — a phrase that can quickly become a habit,” he says and adds, “But if you’ve made an appointment with yourself to exercise, keep it. Every single session matters — the benefits stack up over time, often in ways you don’t notice until much later.”

Measure your progress

A fitness tracker, a simple journal, or regular health check-ups can make your progress visible and motivating. “Personally, exercise keeps my mind sharp, my body resilient, and my spirit energized. As doctors, we often remind our patients to take care of their health — but it’s equally vital that we lead by example. Staying fit enables me to meet the demands of my profession, manage stress, and fully enjoy life beyond the hospital.”

Simple advice:

“Whether you’re a student, a busy professional, or retired, your health is your greatest asset. Protect it with regular exercise, thoughtful goals, consistent effort, and honest self-assessment. Start today, stay the course, and your future self will thank you.”
