From Reel Hero to Real Power: Vijay’s Political Entry Turns Blockbuster

Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam,

The victory of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) brought out an old truth about the connection between cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu. Like MGR and his protégé Jayalalithaa, only heroic figures of the masses win. Actor Vijay’s grand political triumph in his maiden assembly poll follows this pattern of the hero emerging to help the people.

Many actors and actresses tried their hand at politics, including thespians like Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan. Even the mighty Rajinikant gave up his political dream before entering the fray. Vijay took the plunge, against all odds, and has come out victorious.

Fought alone

The people of Tamil Nadu, didn’t care that Vijay was involved in an ugly divorce spat with his wife Sangeetha. They brought this out as an election campaign gimmick to tarnish his reputation. But Vijay fought, refused to enter an alliance with any regional or national party. Vijay was denied release of his final film Jana Nayagan, imposed on him impossible conditions for campaign rallies in the wake of the terrible tragedy that occurred in one of his political meetings and family court proceedings that should not normally be made public to protect privacy — fought all the odds to emerge as the winner.

Public support was phenomenal

The wave of public support for Vijay was of such magnitude as to see the downing of giants of the Dravidian world like M.K. Stalin, chief minister of one term but experience of over 50 years in politics, and almost his entire cabinet. This victory belongs only to Vijay. The conquering hero has come in spite of all the odds that were stacked against him.

Trisha’s unwavering support stands out

On Monday, May 4, Trisha visited the famous Lord Venkateswara Temple at Tirupati for an early morning darshan to offer prayers and seek blessings, marking her 43rd birthday. From there, the actor travelled back to Chennai and drove straight to her co-star Vijay’s Panaiyur residence to congratulate him on his party TVK's landslide victory in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Trisha had earlier dropped a massive hint online after voting in the recent TN polls, signalling her support for Vijay's party. She took to Instagram to share a picture of the ink mark on her finger, set to the song Arjunar Villu from their hit film Ghilli, cropping the part of the track that features whistles, the TVK party symbol. The post caused a stir, with fans interpreting it as a subtle show of support for Vijay's political outfit.

Wishes for Vijay

I am very proud and happy. My wishes to my son. In the last two years, his confidence has been fantastic, and the faith he had that he will become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

I appreciate his decision to stand alone. As a leader, his boldness lies in saying he will stand on his own legs with no alliance. I think this is a historical success, a historical victory for Vijay.”

S.A. Chandrasekar Vijay’s father

Actor Sriman, Vijay’s close friend, who campaigned for him, believes Vijay will become the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. He shared a video clipping from the ‘Madras Dhost’ song from Nenjinile (1999). In the song he refers to Vijay as the CM. “Thank you, Makkalay. Makkal theerpay maheysan theerpu. Our CM will work for you. He is genuine at heart. Once he promises, he tries his best to honour his word; he will work sincerely to fulfil all promises,” he posted. — SRIMAN

“Congratulations, @actorvijay sir. First doubted and then crowned. Happened at our home and now it’s happening in our neighbouring home. Underdog winning is always absolute cinema ( or should I say absolute politics ?) :) Hope great things follow for the people of Tamil Nadu who have made their decision clear.”< — Nani

“My Admiration and congratulations to the people of Tamil Nadu for turning up so strongly to vote and take a stand for themselves. Wishing all the people of TN and the new CM all prosperity and collective growth. Excited to see this new Phase and Face of Tamil Politics”

Vijay Devarakonda

“The people have echoed it back with absolute conviction. Heartiest congratulations to @actorvijay on this spectacular and resounding victory! This moment is a true testament to your vision, your perseverance, and the unwavering love people have for you. The people of Tamil Nadu have spoken-loud, clear, and with immense pride. This isn’t just a win, it’s a celebration of a deep, powerful connection with millions. (sic).”
