Combined with the colours of the flag, these elements create a powerful sense of pride and belonging,” explains Suarez.

These add a refreshing splash of colour, as beauty isn’t just art but also self-expression, conveying unspoken emotions through a brushstroke. Suddenly, everyone’s talking about football, and you just want to be part of it somehow,” adds Sean Fernandes, an engineer from Mumbai.

These aren’t just designs but visual metaphors for strength, pride and resilience. “I believe the World Cup brings out powerful emotions in people. Fans want to feel part of something bigger, support their country, and share that pride with the world. In my case, this series was born from my desire to combine two passions that have shaped my life: makeup and football,” adds Suarez.

It’s not only about how you look, but how you feel from within that takes it one step further. “Today, social media has transformed makeup into a form of storytelling for every big event,” says Divya Singh, a leading makeup artist.

Platforms like TikTok and Instagram allow creators to share their art with people all over the world, making it possible for sports, culture, beauty, and creativity to come together in a way that connects communities across borders.

National animals — lions, eagles, jaguars and flags are prides for people, seeing them on screen or worn on jerseys evokes nationalism, which one can't refuse to feel. “I think makeup can be much more than aesthetics—it can be a way to express identity, culture, memories, and emotions,” says Suarez. More and more people are looking for content that tells a story rather than simply looking beautiful. “Football-inspired makeup reminds us that both art and sports have the power to bring people together, inspire passion, and create meaningful connections.”

Stadium Cheers to Viral Reels

Social media blurs distance. A fan in Venezuela, India, or France can instantly connect through shared visuals, reinforcing a sense of global community. The World Cup reached over 5 billion viewers in 2022. Beauty becomes a universal language, allowing fans to participate in the cultural moment beyond the stadium. TikTok has over 1 billion monthly active users globally, with beauty content among its top-performing categories. “I may not wear a jersey, but during match time, the remote is mine — dinner’s early, snacks are ready, and somehow our quiet evenings turn into full-blown stadium chaos with chai in hand and all of us shouting like we’re in the front row,” says Anushka Cerejo, a homemaker.

DIY Makeup Tips

This DIY approach democratises beauty, offering a refreshing and inclusive experience. As Suarez points out, the focus should be on the emotion behind the look rather than technical precision. Whether it’s a simple cheek stripe or an elaborate design, the intention matters most. TikTok, Instagram and X have all contributed to this trend, with many creating their own versions. Beauty, in some ways, is now an identity encompassing aesthetics, from passive consumption to active participation. Fans are no longer just watching. They’re actively contributing. Tutorials break down complex looks into easy, replicable steps, making it accessible to everyone. Within this ecosystem, makeup transcends aesthetics, becoming a language. “There’s something about the World Cup that just pulls everyone in—you don’t even realise when you go from casually watching to planning your whole day around matches,” adds Sarvajeet Tiwari, a film student.

Beyond the Game

FIFA-inspired makeup signals a broader shift in beauty perception and practice. It’s no longer just about looking good; it’s about feeling seen, expressing identity and telling a story. This trend also highlights the profound influence of sport on lifestyle and culture. “Football has transcended stadiums and screens, shaping fashion, beauty and self-expression in personal and collective ways,” says Joe Mathew, who has bought two tickets for the FIFA Quarterfinals (July 9) Match 97 at the Boston Stadium.

Fans don’t need professional kits or advanced skills to take part—they need an idea, a sense of identity, and the willingness to experiment. Imperfection becomes part of the appeal, reinforcing the authenticity that audiences increasingly value. Because today, the real uniform isn’t worn—it’s painted, performed, and unapologetically claimed.
