For years, chunky heels ruled Bollywood fashion. They were practical, dramatic, and impossible to miss on red carpets, airport runways, and paparazzi snapshots. From towering platform sandals to thick block heels paired with oversized silhouettes, the trend mirrored fashion’s obsession with maximalism and comfort-driven dressing. But lately, Bollywood’s leading ladies are quietly moving in a different direction. The chunky heel is losing ground to sharper, sleeker footwear choices — pointed stilettos, sculpted slingbacks, kitten heels, and pencil boots that bring polish instead of bulk. The shift is subtle, but unmistakable.

Head Over Heels

From promotional appearances to casual street style, actresses are increasingly opting for footwear that elongates the body and sharpens an outfit’s overall structure. Instead of shoes becoming the loudest part of the look, they are now blending seamlessly into cleaner, more refined styling. Fashion insiders say this evolution reflects a wider return to minimalism after years dominated by oversized trends.

“Fashion always moves in cycles,” says designer and stylist Shawn Lobo, who believes the new footwear direction is closely tied to the return of tailored dressing. “Chunky heels worked beautifully during the oversized fashion phase because everything was dramatic — big jackets, loose pants, exaggerated shapes. But now silhouettes are becoming sharper and more fitted, so naturally footwear is becoming sleeker too. A pointed stiletto instantly adds sophistication and length to the frame.”

The Heeling Touch

That polished effect is exactly what many celebrities appear to be embracing. Whether it’s monochrome power dressing during film promotions or elegant body-skimming gowns at events, slimmer footwear creates a cleaner visual line. Pencil boots, especially, have emerged as a favourite because they add edge without overwhelming an outfit.

Image consultant Ritika Bhasin notes that footwear trends often mirror larger cultural moods. “Post-pandemic fashion leaned heavily into comfort and oversized styles, which is why chunky shoes became so dominant. But now there’s a visible shift toward intentional dressing again. People want refinement. Sleeker heels communicate confidence, structure, and elegance in a very effortless way.”

All Time High

Social media has accelerated the transition. Fashion audiences today are hyper-aware of proportion and styling details. On platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, minimalist fashion aesthetics are dominating mood boards, encouraging cleaner and more curated looks. The “quiet luxury” movement has also played a role, favouring timeless silhouettes over statement-heavy pieces.

That doesn’t mean comfort has completely disappeared from fashion conversations. Instead, celebrities and stylists are finding ways to balance wearability with elegance. Kitten heels, pointed mid-heels, and slim ankle boots are replacing heavy platforms without sacrificing ease entirely. The focus is less about towering height and more about shape and finish.

Stylist Amandeep Kaur believes the appeal of sleek footwear lies in its versatility. “A sharp heel works with almost everything — sarees, gowns, trousers, even relaxed denim. Chunky footwear can sometimes dominate the outfit, whereas slimmer shoes elevate it without competing for attention. The styling feels more mature and intentional.”

B-town Steps It Up

Bollywood’s current fashion phase also reflects a growing appreciation for old-school glamour. Classic pumps, pointed boots, and strappy stilettos evoke the elegance associated with 1990s and early-2000s celebrity fashion — an era that continues to inspire modern styling choices. Many younger actors are revisiting these aesthetics but pairing them with contemporary tailoring and muted palettes.

The trend is especially visible during promotional tours, where stars are dressing more strategically than ever before. Every look is dissected online within minutes, and footwear now plays a key role in creating a cohesive visual identity. Sleeker shoes photograph better with streamlined silhouettes and help maintain a luxurious aesthetic across different appearances.

There is also a psychological element to the shift. Chunky shoes often project boldness and rebellion, while slender heels suggest control, elegance, and precision. In many ways, Bollywood fashion appears to be entering a phase where understated styling carries more impact than overt statement dressing.

On Your Toes

Fashion experts caution against declaring chunky heels entirely “over.” Trends rarely disappear completely; they evolve and return in new forms. Platforms and block heels may continue to exist in casual and streetwear-inspired wardrobes, especially because comfort remains an important factor for many consumers. But within Bollywood’s high-fashion space, the momentum is clearly favouring cleaner, sharper footwear choices.

As fashion continues to move toward refined minimalism, the new shoe language is becoming increasingly clear: less bulk, more precision. The attention is no longer on shoes that scream for attention, but on styles that quietly complete the look.

And in showbiz's ever-changing style universe, that understated elegance may just be the loudest statement of all.
