The Indian film fraternity is aghast at the AI-generated happy ending for the Dhanush-starrer Raanjhana.

Madhu Mantena, the producer who brought the first 100-crore film Ghajini to Hindi cinema back in 2008, while supporting the stand taken in this regard by Dhanush and the film’s director Aanand Rai, also feels one has to move with the times, and put appropriate curbs in place to safeguard the field of cinema.
“As unethical as it may seem to change the ending, we of the Indian film industry— I include, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and all other film industries — cannot ignore scientific progress. Artificial Intelligence is the future. Not only of cinema but of all walks of life. We have to learn to work in tandem with technology, not fight it,” he said.
Madhu, who is currently working on several projects, including a superhero franchise, feels legal restrictions need to be imposed on how far the AI technology can be imposed on cinema. “You can’t take James Cameron’s Titanic and bring the lovers to life as an experiment. In future we will need watertight contracts about the imposition of AI-generated alterations to our films. Otherwise AI could be the death of cinema as we know and love it,” he added.
