It may have been with Hyderabad previously, but Jonny Bairstow is really enjoying his return to the Sunrisers franchise, this time around with the Eastern Cape in the SA20. After not being able to convert starts into big scores, Bairstow finally brought the house down in the SA20, smashing an unbeaten 85 off just 45 as Sunrisers Eastern Cape breezed past Pretoria Capitals to register their third bonus point win.
Speaking during select SA20 media interaction after the match, Bairstow admitted that after hitting first three balls of Keshav Maharaj's over for a six, he was trying to hit six sixes in the over:
"Did it look like I went into my shell, just with a four? Yes, of course [was looking to hit six sixes], like when you've got three away and you're thinking, okay, maybe let's try and give it a go. So, yes, unfortunately, I got that one for four. But, yes, I was definitely trying."
On dealing with pressure playing in the overseas leagues around the world:
"Look, I think there are different pressures. Obviously, when you're playing with England, there's pressure of playing for England. When you're playing franchise cricket, there's pressure of being an overseas, like people are in the IPL. So, yes, there are different pressures. But, at the same time, the enjoyment factor is a huge part of why I'm still playing. And long may that continue."
Reflecting on the match:
"Yes, it was a great game. I thought the bowlers did a really good job to restrict them to that score. Obviously, then [Sherfane] Rutherford finished with Quickfire 40. On a different day, with the sun not being where it was, we potentially would have got him out a bit earlier, so then we'd have been chasing less. But, yes, when we went out to bat, it was just a case of playing good cricket shots. Quinny's got a wealth of knowledge and experience of playing here over so many years. So, yes, just tapping into that."
On conversations with his opening partner Quinton de Kock in the middle:
"Yes, not much. It's obviously one of those things because we have both played so much. There are just little bits that you'll chat about. But, it's just a case of staying as calm as possible, watching the ball and reacting."
