"SA20 Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint": De Zorzi Backs Super Giants’ Long-Term Vision

Johannesburg: Durban's Super Giants didn't have the best SA20 season earlier this year, finishing fifth in the six-team tournament. They will be keen to make amends when they take on Season 4 runners-up Pretoria Capitals in the Highveld on January 19, 2027.
Tony de Zorzi, who scored a match-winning 78 for his former team, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, in the Season 3 Qualifier at Centurion, has since switched allegiance to the Super Giants. While admitting that the opening game of a new season helps set the tone, he stressed that the focus remains on the bigger picture, with the 10-match league stage leading into the knockouts.
"The first game allows you to set a foundation and give yourself some momentum," De Zorzi told SA20 during an interaction. "But it is a long tournament, and as you have seen through the years, it's a bit more of a marathon than a sprint."
De Zorzi also said the Super Giants will lean on the experience of captain Aiden Markram, who has scored 783 runs in 25 innings at the venue, averaging 43.5 at a strike rate of 143.4 in T20 cricket. His numbers in the SA20 are even better, with an average of 55.5 and a strike rate of 150 at the venue.
"Local knowledge is going to be important for us. Obviously, we have 'Sauce' (Markram), which is amazing for us. His knowledge is obviously being used by everyone, and all the local players know the conditions well. Everyone enjoys playing at Centurion. It's always good games, high-scoring games, and the crowd is always exciting there, so I'm sure it'll be a great start," said De Zorzi.
It is not just Markram. Heinrich Klaasen, who has been a key part of the Super Giants' batting line-up over the past four seasons, has struck at a blistering strike rate of 223 in the two innings he has played at SuperSport Park in the tournament.
De Zorzi will be looking forward to partnering again with the likes of Markram, Klaasen, Jos Buttler and Devon Conway as the Super Giants chase their maiden SA20 title.
