The exchange began when an X user (@KDRposts) posted an image of Sindhu carrying a silver vessel during the festivities, commenting in Telugu: "Flowers arranged together is called Bathukamma. Do not impose your madness on the festival."
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu issued a graceful yet firm response on X (formerly Twitter) to an online user who criticized her festive attire and celebration of the floral festival, Bathukamma.
The exchange began when an X user (@KDRposts) posted an image of Sindhu carrying a silver vessel during the festivities, commenting in Telugu: "Flowers arranged together is called Bathukamma. Do not impose your madness on the festival."
Addressing the criticism directly, Sindhu advised the user to understand tradition before rushing to pass judgment. Explaining the personal context behind her celebration, the badminton champion shared that having recently married into a family hailing from Karimnagar—the heart of Telangana—this marked her very first time celebrating Bathukamma.
Sindhu pointed out that the traditional ritual was fully observed, highlighting a large, ornate floral arrangement visible in the background:
"See that rather large floral Bathukamma in the background? I spent pretty much the whole day decorating it, and that’s what we celebrated with!"
Clarifying the significance of the silver piece in her hands, she added:
"The silver Bathukamma was my mother-in-law’s way of welcoming me into a tradition that’s so close to her heart. Surely, there’s room for a mother’s love alongside tradition❤️."
Her warm and measured response garnered widespread praise across social media platforms, with users applauding the athlete for embracing local culture while giving a dignified answer to online gatekeeping.
