Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Vanish from ICC Player Rankings, What Exactly Happened?
The updated chart with Shubman Gill at the top followed by Pakistan's Babar Azam, showed Rohit and Virat nowhere, not even in the top 100, igniting speculations on social media
Days after modern-day greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli cementing Number 2 and 4 spots respectively on the ICC ODI Batting rankings, they had inexplicably vanished from the ranking charts on Wednesday sparking chaos across the fan clubs.
What Happened:
On Wednesday, cricketing world was left baffled when Rohit and Virat disappeared from the ICC ODI batting rankings without a warning. Just days earlier, Rohit had sat comfortably at No. 2, and Kohli at No. 4.
The updated chart with Shubman Gill at the top followed by Pakistan's Babar Azam, showed them nowhere, not even in the top 100, igniting speculations on social media.
Social media posts soon stormed the cyber space. A fan lamented, “It’s over bhai. Are they retiring?” while another pleaded, “My heart is not ready for this,” begging them not to retire.
Reddit too went wild, with users pointing out errors and joking, “Even Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell, who are retired, are there—it's just a glitch”.
What ICC said:
Thankfully, the ICC swiftly intervened. According to Wisden, not just Rohit and Kohli, many retired players also reappeared in the list and a technical glitch was to blame.
The system error had temporarily erased their names, but the duo was reinstated promptly, once again appearing at their deserved No. 2 and No. 4 slots.
